PDF and image API pricing — you pay for renders, not for seats

Five plans and Enterprise, PDFs and images in every one of them. Start with 50 free renders a month or buy a render pack without a subscription. Paid plans top up automatically, so a busy month never stops your pipeline — and there is never an overage bill.

What does a PDF generation API cost?

Dynamic Document API costs nothing for the first 50 renders a month. Paid plans start at €15 a month billed annually for 3,000 renders — €0.005 each — and go up to €319 for 200,000. Every plan produces PDFs and images from the same engine. When a paid plan runs low, 1,000 renders are added automatically at €6 to €2 per 1,000; on the free plan a pack of 10,000 renders costs €50.

Auto top-up: no hard stop, no overage bill

Paid plans are never billed for overage. Instead, when fewer than 200 renders are left in your workspace — included renders plus any prepaid ones — we add 1,000 renders at your plan's top-up price so your renders keep working. Stripe charges your card within about 24 hours, the renders are available at once, and you get an email for every top-up.

  • Price per top-up of 1,000 renders: €6 on Starter, €4 on Growth, €3 on Pro, €2 on Scale, from €1.20 on Enterprise — all excluding VAT.
  • Monthly top-up limit. The most your workspace can spend per cycle on plan plus top-ups. It defaults to twice your plan's monthly price and you can change it in the dashboard; 0 turns top-ups off. On Growth, for example, the default limit of €118 leaves €59 for top-ups — up to 14 top-ups, or 14,000 extra renders, per cycle.
  • Order of use. Included renders first, then prepaid renders with the earliest expiry. Top-up renders roll over and expire 12 months after purchase; included renders reset every cycle.
  • One at a time. A new top-up is only added after the previous one has been paid. If a payment fails, no further top-ups are added until it succeeds.
  • When nothing can be added — limit reached, top-ups off, or a payment outstanding — and the renders run out, live renders fail with 402 render_limit_reached until the next period. Test keys keep working, so development is never blocked.
  • You are told in time. Email and the usage.threshold_reached webhook at 50 %, 80 % and 100 % of the included renders, and when the limit stops further top-ups.

The API calls top-ups render_blocks and the limit spend_cap_cents; both show up in GET /v1/account. The contractual wording is in section 6 of the Terms of Service.

What one render actually costs

Plan price divided by the included volume. Top-ups are the price of 1,000 extra renders on that plan; packs are one-off purchases, so they have a single price.

A top-up render costs a little more than an included one on the same plan — that is the price of never having to stop. If you top up every month, the next plan up is cheaper per render and brings higher limits with it.

Top up or move up?

ComparisonStay and top upMove to the next plan
Best whenA peak is occasional — a month-end run, a campaignThe peak is the new normal
You payYour plan plus €2–€6 per 1,000 extra renders, capped by your monthly limitA higher flat price with a lower cost per render
LimitsStay as they areHigher rate limit, concurrency, page count and retention

Example, 40,000 rendersGrowth €47 + 25 top-ups €100 = €147 (needs a limit above the default)Pro €119 — cheaper and simpler

The rule of thumb: if your top-ups cost more than the difference to the next plan, move up. The dashboard shows both numbers side by side.

When a hosted API is not the cheaper option

Below roughly 50 renders a month the free plan covers you and price is not the question. Above a few million a month, or when policy forbids sending content to a third party, running your own Chromium fleet becomes competitive again — at that point you are paying us for the operations work, not for the rendering. We would rather say that here than have you discover it after the invoice.

What counts as a render

One render is one generated document of up to 50 pages, or one image at one output size. Billing by the document rather than by the page keeps the cost of a long report predictable, and the 50-page unit keeps thousand-page exports from being priced like a one-page invoice.

OperationBilled renders
PDF render (template, HTML, URL or Markdown), up to 50 pages1
Each additional 50 pages of the same PDF+1
Image render, per output size (all requested formats of one size included)1
PDF tool operation: merging PDFs or converting one to PDF/A1
E-invoice layer on a PDF render (Factur-X, ZUGFeRD, XRechnung)included (+0)
E-invoice XML export1
Signed render link, first request1
Signed render link, every later request (cache hit)0
Batch ZIP download0 — the renders inside are already billed
Test renders, editor previews, failed and cancelled renders0

Examples: a 12-page invoice is one render, and so is the same invoice as a Factur-X e-invoice; a 120-page report is three renders; a social image in two sizes is two renders. A signed render link is billed once, however often it is fetched: put one in an og:image tag and the crawlers, chat apps and timelines that load it a thousand times cost you a single render. The number billed is recorded per render in billed_renders and in the X-Billed-Renders response header, so your own cost dashboard can reconcile it.

A signed render link is a URL you hand out instead of an API call: it renders on first request and is served from cache afterwards, so it costs one render however often it is loaded. That is a different thing from the signed, expiring URL of a finished file, which every plan gets. E-invoicing covers Factur-X, ZUGFeRD and XRechnung, and the e-invoice layer on a PDF render costs no extra render. Enterprise starts at 1,000,000 renders a month with extra renders from €1.20 per 1,000, and its limits and SLA are agreed per contract — see Enterprise.

The same on every plan

  • The same engine: 2026.4 on Chromium 153, JavaScript enabled by default. The free plan renders exactly like Scale.
  • PDFs and images — PNG, JPG and WebP — from the same templates.
  • Median render time 216 ms, p95 516 ms1.
  • Signed, expiring file URLs and automatic deletion at the end of your retention window.
  • On every paid plan: unlimited versioned templates, webhooks, test mode and a Data Processing Agreement, with our sub-processors published.

1 Measured over 1,664 successful renders: queue plus processing in the worker, excluding network time and API overhead.

FAQ

Questions about pricing

How much does a PDF generation API cost?

Dynamic Document API starts at €0 for 50 renders a month. Paid plans begin at €15 a month billed annually for 3,000 renders — €0.005 each — and go up to Scale at €319 for 200,000 renders, about €0.0016 each. Enterprise starts at €1,500. Every plan renders PDFs and images.

What counts as one render?

One generated document of up to 50 pages, or one image at one output size, counts as one render — a 12-page invoice is one render, a 120-page report is three. An e-invoice layer on a PDF costs nothing extra. Failed, cancelled and test renders are not billed.

Are images included in every plan?

Yes. PDFs and images come from the same engine and the same templates. An image counts as one render per output size, and every format of that size — PNG, JPG, WebP — is included in it.

What happens when I reach my limit?

On a paid plan, nothing stops: when fewer than 200 renders are left, 1,000 more are added automatically at your plan's top-up price — €6 on Starter, €4 on Growth, €3 on Pro, €2 on Scale — and charged to your card. You get an email for every top-up. There is never an overage bill.

Can I turn automatic top-ups off?

Yes. Every workspace has a monthly top-up limit, by default twice your plan's price. Lower it in the dashboard or set it to zero to switch top-ups off. When no top-up can be added and the renders are used up, live renders return 402 render_limit_reached until the next period; test keys keep working.

Can I buy renders without a subscription?

On the free plan, yes: render packs of 10,000 renders for €50, 50,000 for €200 or 250,000 for €750, each valid for 12 months and kept when you upgrade. Paid plans top up automatically instead, so they do not need packs.

How much do I save with annual billing?

20 percent on every plan. Starter is €15 a month billed annually against €19 billed monthly — €180 instead of €228 a year.

Can I cancel at any time?

Yes. Monthly plans can be cancelled at any time and end with the paid period. Annual plans run until the end of the year you paid for. Consumers in the EU have a statutory right of withdrawal, explained on the withdrawal page.
